Emergency Assistance Program – CARES Act

Financial Assistance For Eligible Suffolk County Residents

Through funding from the federal Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) program, the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. is offering financial assistance to eligible Suffolk County residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding originates from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The program provides financial assistance for individuals/families who experienced a sudden loss of income due to COVID-19. Financial assistance includes, but is not limited to:

Rent arrears:

If you fell into rent arrears (not current month’s rent) due to loss of income, you may qualify for assistance if you regained the income necessary to be able to sustain your rental expense on a monthly basis.

First month’s rent/broker’s fee/security deposit:

If you’re currently homeless or are in danger of becoming homeless and do not qualify for other financial assistance, you may qualify for rental assistance only if you can sustain your rental expenses moving forward on a monthly basis.

Mortgage arrears:

If you fell behind in mortgage arrears you may qualify for assistance. We can possibly assist with the interest, principal, PMI, and home owner’s escrow portion of the mortgage payment, as long as you’re able to sustain going forward. We do not pay the property taxes portion of the mortgage, which you must be pay prior to us providing the assistance.

Utility arrears:

If you’re 2 or more months behind in utility arrears due to a loss of income or unexpected emergency expenses, you may qualify for assistance, if you can sustain going forward.

Other expenses:

If you’re behind in any other major expenses such as car payments, car insurance, health insurance, etc., due to an unexpected loss of income, you may qualify for assistance as long as you can sustain going forward on a monthly basis.
